Yerevan speaks and presents
On August 6, 1957 the first news program was broadcasted, "News of the Week", which was not periodical at first; only starting from February 1958 the "News" program became periodical. The news editorial office was also created at that time. Among the first political commentators were John Kirakosyan, Hakob Hakobyan.
The social-political programs were created in parallel with the feature ones, however, developed more slowly. TV journalism was not formed yet.
People who worked in press or radio became TV journalists. The news editorial offices of radio and TV were located in the same building. The TV news, at the first stage, were duplicated from radio news. For visual presentation, TV journalists used photographs, maps, movie shots.
Great attention was paid to news releases. "News" also had "Weekly news", "Latest news", "TV news" releases. There was certain division by topics: social-political, that were often presented without visual presentations, international news were read by the host and supplied by news agencies, cultural news had the smallest share, while sport news covered only football.
Talking and moving "cabinet" in the corner of the room
It was something new for the people and an amazement. Many people could not even turn on their new, expensive purchase - the TV set.
The Fall of 1956. TV station was not working very well yet, the people complained that the TV sets are getting out of order due to poor work. It was decided to explain to everyone from the screen how to regulate the TV sets. The program had to be hosted by the chief engineer, who had to explain how to do it. However, he could only speak Russian. It was decided to translate his speech. A scenario was written. The text had to be read in Russian, then the speech had to be translated into Armenian. Ishkhan Gharibyan, an actor had to read the translation of the text. He had just arrived from Persia and did not know any Russian. Although the text was purely technical, Gharibyan learned it by heart from the beginning to the end.
The day of broadcasting came. Ishkhan Gharibyan was so emotional, that he could neither read nor recite the text. And the engineer, who did not understand Armenian, did not know, what to show. An interesting scene began: The program host told what he remembered, the chief engineer, who did not understand a word in Armenian, stood there astonished. In the middle of the program, the engineer interrupted Ishkhan and started to explain in Russian. The program was aired in Russian.
The next day people were calling in and humorously informing how well they could regulate their TV's.
